Applicants must demonstrate the necessary legal, financial, and operational competencies to establish and run a sheriff’s office, including the ability to provide essential sheriff services such as service of court documents, execution of warrants, and holding auctions.

Requirements for Holding an Office of Sheriff
Applicants must:
- Be South African citizens or lawfully admitted permanent residents.
- Be fit and proper persons.
- Demonstrate financial capability and operational ability to establish and run a sheriff’s office.
- Possess an appropriate post-grade 12 qualification (certificate, diploma, or degree).
- Have an understanding of civil law and relevant South African legislation.
- Show knowledge of the Constitution, Insolvency Act, Magistrates’ Court Act, among others.
- Be competent to conduct sheriff duties, including serving court documents, executing warrants, holding auctions, and managing trust accounts.
- Hold a Fidelity Fund Certificate issued by the South African Board for Sheriffs.
Preference will be given to applicants promoting demographic diversity.

- A completed Form 1 (J743) (obtainable from justice.gov.za or sheriffs.org.za)
- A curriculum vitae
- Certified copies of identity document and educational qualifications
- Certified copies of service certificates or affidavits
- Testimonials from two previous employers (if available)
- Details of business undertakings or trades
- Names, addresses, and contacts of two references
- An affidavit of previous convictions or sequestration (if applicable)
- An affidavit confirming financial ability to establish the sheriff’s office
- A certified copy of driver’s license (if available)

All applications must be received by 16h00 on 01 July 2025. Late submissions will not be considered.
Important Notes
- The Minister reserves the right not to fill any advertised sheriff position.
- Applicants will be notified within three months if not invited for an interview.
