Opportunity Overview
Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo, in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), invites applications for 125 EPWP Youth Graduate Work Opportunities.
This is a 4-month program designed to provide valuable experience and skills to young people in environmental and conservation fields.
Duration: 4 months
Daily stipend: R247,50
Closing date: 27 June 2025 (online application only)
Note: Only youth residing in the City of Johannesburg will be considered.
Minimum Entry Requirements
- Qualification: M + 3 (Matric plus 3 years of study), with a qualification of 360 credits or a Diploma NQF 6.
- Age: Between 18 – 35 years.

Positions Available
Johannesburg Zoo – 15 Positions
- Field: Animal Attendant
- Summary of Roles: Cleaning animal enclosures, feeding animals, monitoring animal behavior, paperwork, environmental education, and awareness.
Environmental Education (All City Regions) – 16 Positions
- Position: Environmental Educator
- Field: Environmental Management / Environmental Science / Environmental Education
- Summary of Roles: Educate and raise awareness on environmental issues, organize events for environmental days, conduct outreach campaigns, and implement curricula at education centers and nature reserves.
Protected Areas (All Regions) – 65 Positions
- Positions: Nature Conservator / Park Ranger
- Fields: Conservation Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Conservation Management
- Summary of Roles: Conservation maintenance (alien plant control, trail maintenance, fence monitoring, fire management), law enforcement, community engagement, research assistance, GIS, and environmental planning.
Ecological Services – 13 Positions
- Positions: Water Monitor, Climate Change Ambassador, Nature Conservator, Ecologist, Horticulturist
- Fields: Environmental Management, Conservation, Water Resource Management, Horticulture
- Summary of Roles: Managing catchment areas, botanical gardens, ecological assessments, wildlife management, alien plant control, and integrated herbarium services.
Nursery Management – 14 Positions
- Positions: Forestry Monitor, Occupational Health Officer
- Fields: Forestry Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science
- Summary of Roles: Nursery management, tree propagation, forest management, health and safety in nurseries, and tree planting services.
Capital Infrastructure – 2 Positions
- Position: Project Management Officer
- Field: Environmental Management / Science
- Summary of Roles: Assessing development projects, environmental and project management.
