Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production.

It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa, based on coal reserves and marketable coal production.

Thungela primarily exports to markets in India, Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Job Description
The Environmental Officer is responsible for monitoring and reporting on environmental activities and performance on site to the Environmental Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in retaining ISO 14001 certification and minimizing operational impacts on the environment
  • Supporting internal and external environmental audits to ensure legal compliance and implementation of standards and policies

  • Capturing and analyzing accurate environmental data for timely reporting
  • Conducting environmental inspections to identify impacts related to Air Quality, Water Management, Waste Management, Land, and Biodiversity

  • Compiling mine-specific environmental reports from inspections and audits
  • Proactively advising the Environmental Coordinator on identified environmental challenges
  • Recording environmental incidents in the Mine environmental incident reporting system

  • Conducting internal site inspections/audits to verify compliance with the approved Environmental Management Programme and legal requirements
  • Supporting operational compliance with relevant environmental and SHE legal requirements
  • Submitting environmental reports in accordance with the Mine’s Environmental Management System (EMS)

  • Assisting in the implementation of a systematic process to track legal compliance related to EMPRs, EAs, and IWULs
  • Ensuring environmental issues are identified and managed within the internal mine environmental management system

  • Assisting in obtaining environmental permits/licenses to meet project timelines
  • Managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, understanding their needs, and resolving issues promptly

Qualifications:

  • Advanced Diploma / Degree in Environmental Management or a related field (NQF 7)

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ operational experience managing environmental issues, preferably in mining
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an Environmental Professional in Training or Environmental Trainee in a related discipline

  • Experience in Water, Land, Air, Waste, Biodiversity, and Environmental Management Systems within the mining industry
  • Familiarity with Enablon and/or Isometrix environmental management systems

Additional Information:

  • Knowledge of South African environmental legislation, including the Mine Health and Safety Act
  • Strong understanding of ISO 14001 and relevant environmental management standards
  • Good knowledge of Safety and Sustainable Development policies and procedures

  • In-depth understanding of mining industry practices and Water Management
  • Awareness of latest trends in environmental practices
