Background and Organizational Context
UNDP operates in about 170 countries, supporting partner nations to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Regional Service Centre for Africa (RSCA) in Addis Ababa plays a crucial role in developing policies and supporting regional initiatives aligned with Africa’s transformational agenda.
The Inclusive Growth Team focuses on inclusive, sustainable, and resilient development, supporting regional efforts to enhance social contracts, economic transformation, and poverty reduction, especially in post-pandemic recovery contexts.
Thematic Areas of Internship Support
Candidates will have the opportunity to specialize in one of the following three thematic areas:
1. The AUC/UNDP Inclusive Blue Economy Flagship
- Support research, policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, and communication efforts related to Africa’s Blue Economy and AfCFTA.
- Focus on sustainable management of aquatic resources and inclusive economic growth.
2. SDGs Integration and Acceleration
- Assist in collecting and analyzing data on SDG progress at national and local levels.
- Support the integration of SDGs into development plans and budgets, engaging with regional bodies and countries.
3. Social Protection and Inclusive Growth
- Contribute to social protection policy advocacy, program development, and research.
- Support efforts to mainstream social protection for vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities, climate resilience, and community-based initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Depending on the thematic area selected, interns will:
- Conduct background research and policy analysis
- Support stakeholder engagement and communication activities
- Collect and analyze data, produce reports, and contribute to regional and national initiatives
- Assist in administrative and coordination tasks to support team activities
Competencies and Skills
- Interest in international development, SDGs, and inclusive growth
- Strong analytical, research, and writing skills
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork abilities
- Cultural sensitivity and adaptability in multicultural environments
- Basic graphic design and communication skills are a plus
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- Enrolled in or recent graduate of a master’s or bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, development studies, or related fields.
- Must start internship within one year of graduation.
Experience:
- No formal work experience required, but relevant experience in international development is advantageous.
Skills:
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Knowledge of SDGs, integrated development approaches, and familiarity with the UN system is an asset.
Language Skills:
- English proficiency is mandatory
- French language skills are highly desirable
Conditions and Benefits
- Interns are eligible for a monthly stipend as per UNDP policies.
- Interns are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses unless otherwise supported.
- Interns do not hold staff status and are not guaranteed employment after the internship.
- The internship aims to complement the intern’s studies and professional development.
