TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship Programme 2025 (Fully-funded to India)

Applications are currently being accepted for the TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship Programme.

This program is a collaboration between the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India.

It offers research opportunities for young scientists from developing countries who wish to pursue a PhD in physical sciences.

Programme Overview

The TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowships enable research at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India.

The research is conducted towards a PhD degree in natural sciences and life sciences. The fellowship is for four years with a possibility of a one-year extension.

Research activities at the Centre cover various areas within physical sciences.

Applicants can pursue a PhD either through the SANDWICH option, where they are registered for a PhD in their home country, or the FULL-TIME option, where they enroll in a PhD course at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences.

Both options involve only one journey to India. Successful completion of approximately one year of coursework is required for admission to the PhD program at the Centre.

The S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences provides a monthly stipend to cover living costs and food, and free on-campus accommodation is also offered.

It is important to note that the monthly stipend is not convertible into foreign currency. While a small contribution towards a Contributory Medical Scheme is deducted, comprehensive health insurance is not provided.

Fellows are required to have their own medical insurance before joining the programme. The language of instruction and research is English.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this fellowship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a maximum age of 35 years on December 31st of the application year.
  • Be a national of a developing country (other than India).
  • Must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country.

  • Hold a Masters Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics, with a total of at least 5 years of undergraduate and postgraduate studies from a recognized university or institute.
  • Be accepted by a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences. Applicants are encouraged to visit the Centre’s website to find a potential supervisor and their research area and contact them.

  • Provide evidence of proficiency in English if their medium of education was not English.
  • Provide evidence of intent to return to their home country upon completion of the fellowship.
  • Not take up other assignments during the fellowship period.
  • Be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.

Application Process

Applications for the TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship Programme can ONLY be submitted via the online portal.

A crucial step in the application process is obtaining a Preliminary Acceptance Letter from a department at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for this letter as early as possible. Requests for acceptance should be directed to the Dean (Academic Programme) at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Sciences via email (deanap@bose.res.in).

When contacting the Dean, applicants must fill out the “SNB FORM” (available for download) and request an Acceptance Letter, including a copy of their CV.

The deadline for applying for a Preliminary Acceptance Letter to SN Bose Center is August 16, 2025. The last date for the issuance of Preliminary Acceptance Letters by SN Bose Center is August 31, 2025.

The deadline for submitting the application form and all required documents to TWAS via the online portal is September 22, 2025 (midnight CEST time).

Applications will not be considered for selection without a preliminary acceptance letter submitted by the deadline.

Applicants are advised that they may apply for only one programme per calendar year in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio.
