The Africa Research Excellence Fund is pleased to announce the launch of the call for applications for the 2025/26 AREF Research Development Fellowship Programme.

Programme Overview
The programme aims to support researchers in Africa who are emerging leaders and working on important challenges for human health, with the goal of developing their skills as researchers.
What the Programme Offers
Successful applicants will receive a three to nine-month placement at a leading research institution in the UK, Europe, or Africa.
Additional support is provided at the fellow’s home institution before and after the placement. Up to £47,000 is available to support the fellowship.
Eligibility
The programme is open to early career researchers.
These are research active post-doctoral scientists and clinicians with higher qualifications who are nationals of and employed in Africa. (Detailed eligibility criteria are available in the guidance documents).
Key Dates
The deadline for submission of all application documents is 13.00 hours GMT on 27 June 2025. Applicants will be notified of the outcomes of their applications by December 2025.
Successful Fellowships can commence between June 2026 and no later than December 2026.
