2025 Internship opportunities at the UNFCCC MOI Division (Remote or in-person)

Applications are now open for a six-month internship within the Capacity-building subdivision of the Means of Implementation (MOI) Division at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat.

Background

The UNFCCC secretariat supports the Convention, its Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement. It is a dynamic organization working to address climate change.

The MOI Division supports the mobilization of financial resources, international cooperation on technology, and capacity-building.

The division provides support to intergovernmental negotiations and constituted bodies.

The four available internship positions are based in the Capacity-building sub-division.

This subdivision supports intergovernmental work and negotiations on capacity-building, the work of the Paris Committee on Capacity-building (PCCB), and other capacity-building projects.

The internship can be remote or in-person.

Objectives of the Internship Assignment

The objectives of the internship are twofold: to support various activities within the Capacity-building subdivision and to enable the intern to develop skills and knowledge relevant to their studies and the work of the subdivision.

Responsibilities of the Internship Assignment

The intern will support a selection of activities within the Capacity-building subdivision, depending on team requirements and the selected candidate’s experience and interests.

These activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting intergovernmental and negotiations on matters related to capacity-building.
  • Supporting the intersessional work of the PCCB.

  • Supporting dedicated capacity-building initiatives such as the Durban Forum, the PCCB’s annual focus area, the Capacity-building Hub, the PCCB Network, Youth4Capacity, the Capacity-building portal, and the Joint Rio Conventions capacity-building programme.

  • Supporting research work in compilation and mapping of capacity gaps and needs, including enhancing the coherence and coordination of capacity-building efforts related to climate change.

Specific tasks may involve:

  • Research on capacity gaps and needs and good practices.
  • Research and drafting inputs for synthesis reports, technical papers, and other knowledge products.
  • Note-taking and summary report writing.

  • Drafting concept notes, newsletters, blog posts, surveys, and other relevant documents.
  • Developing and implementing visual outreach materials (e.g., brochures, flyers, videos, infographics).

  • Maintaining and updating content for digital communication channels (e.g., webpages, social media).
  • Virtual and hybrid event organization and logistics.

  • Exploring tools (including AI) for enhancing knowledge and information management and assisting with website design and usability improvements.
  • Other tasks as needed to support the various activities of the capacity-building subdivision.

Learning Areas and Project Development

During the internship, the successful applicant will gain a deep understanding of the UNFCCC process and the landscape of capacity-building actors.

The intern will also have the opportunity to further develop skills related to network development, stakeholder engagement, analytical thinking, drafting, meeting organization, and digital communications.

Online training will be available to support the intern’s career development.

As part of this learning, the intern will be encouraged to undertake a project relevant to their course of study and the work of the Capacity-building subdivision, in partnership with their supervisor and relevant colleagues.

Timeframe

The internship is for a period of six months, starting in August/September 2025. The exact period will be determined based on the successful intern candidate’s availability.

The selected intern can work remotely with their own equipment or in-person in Bonn. Remote interns should be based in a time zone no more than +/- 2 hours from Central European Time.

Minimum Requirements

  • Candidates must be enrolled in the last year of an undergraduate degree or in a master’s or doctorate programme at a recognized university at the time of application and for the duration of a possible internship.
  • Undergraduate candidates should demonstrate substantial relevant experience and skill in the required areas.

  • Candidates must be fluent in English (both oral and written) and possess strong research, analytical, and writing skills. Knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.

  • Preference is given to candidates studying in fields such as economics, development studies, environmental sciences, international relations, communications, or other related fields with an understanding of climate change.
  • Strong design, communication, and social media skills are an advantage.

Computer Requirements

For a remote internship, candidates will require a laptop or desktop PC (with Windows 10 or newer) or Mac (with the latest MacOS update), as well as a reliable, high-speed internet connection.

An Office 365 license will be provided by the UNFCCC.

Further computer requirements include:

  • An antivirus application which receives regular updates.
  • Newer browser versions with regular updates enabled.
  • Enabled regular Windows 10 updates for Windows laptops or PCs.

A mobile phone is also needed for Multifactor Authentication (MFA) through SMS or the Authenticator App.

For an in-person internship, desk space and IT equipment will be provided.

Internship Conditions

The selected intern will work remotely or in person on a full-time basis (40 hours per week).
