2025 Development Internships at the Ireland Development Cooperation and Africa Division

The Ireland Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is inviting applications for paid internships that have become available within its Development Cooperation and Africa Division.

Closing date: 5pm (Dublin Time) on Friday 9th of May 2025

These internships are designed to provide successful candidates with practical experience in the Government’s international development assistance programme, known as Irish Aid.

Internship Details

Internships will be for a duration of at least 12 months, with a commencement date later this year. All internships will be based within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Dublin or Limerick.

The primary role of a Development Intern involves supporting Development Specialists who provide technical assistance to the Government’s international development assistance programme.

This position offers an opportunity to work within a motivated and skilled team across various disciplines relevant to the aid programme’s policy objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should possess at a minimum a second-class honours undergraduate degree in international relations, including development, or one of several specified related areas.

Fluency in English is essential, along with a high level of oral and written communication skills, including excellent applied writing skills.

A strong interest in Ireland’s foreign policy, including knowledge of Irish Aid, is also required.

Essential attributes include excellent interpersonal skills, initiative, good judgment, and strong administrative, organizational, and computer skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel).

Flexibility and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are also necessary.

Selection Process

Selection will be based on a written test and a competitive interview. If a large number of applications are received, candidates will be shortlisted for the interview based on the information provided in their application. Interviews will be conducted via video conference.

The pay rate applicable is the first point of the Executive Officer salary scale. There is no entitlement to Civil Service status with these internships.

Citizenship Requirements

Eligible candidates must be citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland (pursuant to the agreement between the EU and Switzerland on the free movement of persons), or a non-EEA citizen holding a stamp 4 or stamp 5 permission.

Completed application forms should be emailed to devintern@dfa.ie with “Development Intern Application” in the subject line.

The deadline for applications is strictly 17:00 (Dublin time) on 09 May 2025. Applications received after this closing date will not be considered.
