The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is inviting talented and motivated individuals to join their team as interns at their Floating Office in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

These internships offer a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the forefront of global climate adaptation efforts.

The GCA is seeking applications for the following positions:

  • External Affairs & Policy Intern: This intern will provide crucial support to the GCA’s global advocacy and engagement efforts.
  • Finance Intern: This intern will contribute to the core financial operations that power the GCA’s mission.

The Global Center on Adaptation is a leading international organization dedicated to addressing climate change and promoting adaptation action for resilient development.

Founded in 2018, the organization collaborates with governments, International Financial Institutions (IFIs), businesses, and communities to develop and implement innovative solutions that strengthen resilience and support adaptation to climate change impacts.

The GCA’s work spans high-level policy development, research, agenda-setting, and advocacy, with regional offices in key global locations including the Netherlands, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Bangladesh, and Beijing, as well as a dedicated knowledge and research hub in Groningen, the Netherlands.

Finance Intern

Details for the Finance Intern Position:

  • VACANCY TITLE: 20-029 I Finance Intern
  • TEAM: Finance
  • LOCATION: Rotterdam, the Netherlands
  • LEVEL OF EFFORT: 32 – 40 hours per week
  • START DATE: As soon as possible
  • APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 5th, 2025
  • COMPENSATION: €500 per month – gross

The Finance intern will be a member of the finance unit, which is responsible for the delivery of the organization’s financial objectives and contributes to the financial culture, strategy, and development of the organization.

The intern will support the financial administration of the GCA’s statutory accounts and assist the finance team in bringing professional financial management to the financial accounts team and the wider organization.

Key Responsibilities of the Finance Intern:

  • Assisting in the reconciliation of bank transactions by organizing documentation and comparing records.
  • Supporting the monthly review of ledger activities by helping to identify and flag potential discrepancies.

  • Assisting in processing invoices from suppliers and staff, including the review, verification, and allocation of the cost to the correct project and grants.
  • Supporting the review and initial processing of financial reports from sub-grant partners and helping maintain a system for tracking the submission of partner reports.

  • Assisting in the preparation of documentation, including PBC (Provided By Client) lists, under guidance for GCA’s statutory audit and sub-grant audits.
  • Supporting in drafting financial reports for donors.
  • Helping with organizational timesheet analysis.

Profile of the Finance Intern:

The ideal candidate is a student in Business Administration or equivalent with a specialization in finance and/or economics.

They should have an interest in international development and non-profit organizations accounting. The GCA is seeking a highly motivated, proactive, and open-minded team player with good communication skills.

The intern is expected to work accurately and diligently, paying attention to the smallest details, and possess strong analytical and cooperation skills. Functional knowledge in MS-Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint, is required, with UNIT4 being an advantage.

Fluent work proficiency in the English Language is essential. The candidate should be looking for a 6-month (or longer) internship.

External Affairs & Policy Intern

Details for the External Affairs & Policy Intern Position:

  • Position Title: Intern – External Affairs & Policy
  • Team: External Affairs & Policy
  • LOCATION: Rotterdam, the Netherlands
  • Duration: 6 months (with possibility of extension)
  • Level of Effort: Full-time (40 hours per week)
  • START DATE: As soon as possible
  • APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 5th, 2025
  • Salary Indication: EUR 500 / month (based on 40 hours per week)

The External Affairs & Policy intern will join the External Affairs & Policy Team, which is central to the GCA’s mission of ensuring adaptation remains a priority in global political and policy agendas.

The intern will primarily contribute to policy research and analysis, informing advocacy and high-level engagement activities.

Research will be a key part of understanding global climate adaptation trends and identifying actionable insights to advance GCA’s objectives.

Key Objectives of the External Affairs & Policy Internship:

The intern will contribute primarily to research-driven activities, supporting the External Affairs and Advocacy Team in its efforts to advance GCA’s mission by:

  • Conducting detailed research on climate adaptation policies, global trends, and emerging issues to inform GCA’s advocacy and policy positions.
  • Supporting the analysis of research findings to provide strategic insights for high-level policy discussions.

  • Assisting in the development of communication materials based on research outcomes, to communicate key messages to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contributing to the preparation of briefing documents, reports, and policy papers.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the External Affairs & Policy Intern:

Under the guidance of the Senior Partnerships and External Affairs Officer, the intern will:

Policy Research & Analysis: Conduct in-depth research on climate adaptation policies, global trends, and international best practices.

Analyze research data and provide summaries, recommendations, and strategic insights for use in advocacy efforts and policy development. Assist in preparing policy briefs and reports based on research outcomes.

Event Coordination & Support: Support the research and development of content for high-profile events such as the Annual Advisory Board Meeting and policy dialogues.

Help prepare briefing documents, concept notes, and participant lists with a focus on relevant research findings. Assist in liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the smooth execution of events.

Strategic Communications: Assist in drafting communication materials based on research insights for internal and external audiences, including GCA’s Advisory Board and diplomatic corps.

Monitor and analyze updates related to climate adaptation and global policy trends, summarizing key information for internal use.

Procurement & Operations Support: Assist in managing the procurement process for events, including coordinating tenders and managing vendor relationships. Help track and evaluate the outcomes of research-driven engagements and events.

Qualifications and Requirements for the External Affairs & Policy Intern:

Educational Background: A Master’s degree (or currently enrolled) in International Relations, Political Science, Environmental Policy, Public Policy, or related fields.

Experience: No prior work experience is required, though prior experience in research, policy analysis, or climate-related fields is an advantage.

Skills: Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to summarize complex information clearly and concisely.

Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are essential; French is an advantage. Good organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail.
