UNITAR Global Youth Scholars Development Programme 2025

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is pleased to announce the launch of the Global Youth Scholars Development Programme.

This is a prestigious initiative designed to empower youth worldwide to actively participate in assessing the impact of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Youth aged 18 to 24 are invited to apply for this unique opportunity to develop skills in SDG evaluation, engage in community-based research, and connect with global leaders.

Programme Overview:

This free and comprehensive programme combines online learning, community fieldwork, international networking, and public presentation opportunities. Participants will have the chance to present their evaluation findings to UN officials at the UNITAR Headquarters in Geneva.

Key Dates:

  • Application Deadline: October 31, 2024 (Rolling admissions)
  • Programme Duration: April 2025 – February 2026
  • Final Showcase in Geneva: February 2026

Programme Phases:

Monthly Online Training (June – December 2025):
Virtual modules delivered by UN experts covering SDG evaluation methods, citizen-led monitoring, and digital tools.

Field-Based SDG Evaluations (July – December 2025):
Participants will conduct local case studies using learned tools to assess SDG progress in their communities.

Study Visits (July, August, October, November 2025):
Optional in-person visits to cities including Geneva, Tokyo, Osaka, and Singapore. These visits feature institutional tours, participation in global events, and meetings with leaders.
(Travel fees may apply depending on destination and individual circumstances.)

Evaluation Review & Recognition (December 2025 – February 2026):
Final reports will be reviewed by a UNITAR committee. The top participants will be invited to Geneva in February 2026 to present their findings and network with global leaders.

Who is Eligible?

The programme is open to youth who:

  • Are 18–24 years old
  • Are passionate about sustainability, policy, or global development
  • Demonstrate leadership potential or community engagement

  • Have good communication skills in English
  • Have access to a device and internet for online learning
  • Are committed to completing the programme and submitting a final evaluation report

Learning Topics Include:

  • SDG evaluation principles and methodologies
  • Community-based data collection and citizen monitoring
  • Digital tools for SDG tracking (AI, big data, blockchain)

  • Advocacy and accountability mechanisms
  • Leadership and social impact
  • Innovation in sustainability

Additional Information:

  • Certification: All participants who successfully complete the programme will receive a Certificate of Completion from UNITAR.
  • Programme Fee: Free of charge (participants cover their own travel expenses for optional study visits).

  • Language: English
  • Application Process: Rolling admissions, with the final deadline on October 31, 2025.
