The Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is offering a traineeship opportunity for students and recent graduates interested in gaining professional experience within a multicultural environment and deepening their understanding of the United Nations system.

MDPU develops and delivers training activities in partnership with governments, universities, and international organizations.
Its activities include online training programmes, special projects, advisory services, and the development of training tools and publications.
Qualified candidates will have the opportunity to work at UNITAR headquarters in Geneva for a period of two to three months.
The placement is unpaid, but a monthly lump-sum of 900 CHF will be provided to assist with transportation and miscellaneous costs.
Background
Aligned with the Institute’s goal to promote multilateralism, international cooperation, and global solidarity, MDPU is developing a series of training activities, both face-to-face and online.
Field Visits are 1-2 week programmes, primarily in summer (July and August 2025), allowing participants to experience Geneva’s multilateral environment firsthand.
These include expert lectures, workshops, guided tours, visits to UN agencies, multilateral conferences, and cultural activities.
Online Training Programmes last between 2-4 weeks, mainly in July and August 2025, and are delivered via UNITAR’s e-Learning platform. They comprise modules, live webinars, e-workshops, and virtual guided tours, with live components via Zoom.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Associate Programme Officer, the trainee will assist in preparing and implementing both Field Visits and Online Training Programmes scheduled for July and August 2025.
Key tasks include:
- Liaising with partner institutions and collecting participant information
- Preparing documents and managing content on the virtual e-Learning platform
- Coordinating arrangements for participants’ arrival in Geneva
- Facilitating live components of online training
- Supporting logistics before, during, and after training sessions
- Assisting in outreach and communication efforts
- Developing and enhancing training materials

Dates and Duration
- Start Date: June 2025 (to be discussed with selected candidate)
- Duration: 3 months (full-time, office-based in Geneva)
- Working Days: Five days per week
Minimum Requirements
Eligibility Criteria:
- Enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in international relations, education, history, law, political science, languages, or related fields.
- If recently graduated, must have graduated within the last two years and be able to commence the traineeship within this period.
- Demonstrate high organizational capacity, including time management, logistics, and planning skills.
- Experience in organizing field visits, tours, or related activities.
- Familiarity with online training delivery, events, or related activities.
- Strong social and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of the United Nations System and international affairs.
- Commitment to UN values and principles such as cooperation, respect, and solidarity.
- Skills in strategic marketing and partnership management are assets.
- Expertise in digital marketing and social media platforms is an asset.
- Established networks with potential partners and participants are an asset.
Languages:
- Excellent oral and written English skills are required.
- Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is an asset.
