The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA) and the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) are excited to announce that applications for the Pacific Islander Journalism Scholarship are now open.
Interested individuals can submit their applications up until May 31.
The primary aim of this scholarship is to enhance the representation of Pasifika peoples in news media, particularly within the U.S. and U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands.
Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate a strong commitment to journalism and storytelling that will enrich news coverage and elevate the voices of Indigenous peoples of the Pacific, including those from the Polynesian, Micronesian, and Melanesian communities.
In 2025, the scholarship will award up to two scholarships of $5,000 each.
Recipients of this scholarship will also receive a one-year student membership to both IJA and AAJA, providing invaluable access to professional networks and resources within the journalism industry.
The scholarship funds can be utilized for various career-enhancing purposes, including:
- Covering salary and related expenses for students participating in summer internships at news organizations.
- Subsidizing tuition for students dedicated to pursuing higher education with the goal of entering the journalism field.
- Paying off student loan balances for journalists actively employed in the news industry.
- Supporting professional development and training opportunities.
Given the flexibility of the funding, applicants must clearly specify how they intend to use the scholarship funds while aligning with its mission.
Furthermore, to support this important initiative, tax-deductible donations can be made through the IJA. Donors should specify that their contributions are intended for the Pacific Islander Journalists Scholarship.
The application deadline is May 31.
