Are you passionate about combating misinformation across Africa? Code for Africa (CfA) is excited to announce that it is seeking experienced Fact-Checkers to join the esteemed PesaCheck team.

There are immediate openings for full-time positions based in Senegal.

About PesaCheck:

PesaCheck is recognized as the continent’s largest indigenous fact-checking initiative by geographic coverage, boasting teams in 16 African countries.

The initiative’s mission involves researching and debunking misinformation disseminated online and in traditional media, while publishing over 2,000 fact-checks annually.

PesaCheck collaborates with major platforms such as Facebook and TikTok, in addition to various traditional media outlets.

The team also monitors public officials’ promises and scrutinizes public finances to ensure transparency and accountability.

Key Information for Applicants:

Location: Senegal
Languages: Proficiency in French and English is required; knowledge of Wolof is a significant advantage.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • 3+ years of proven experience in journalism or investigative research, ideally on a fact-checking desk
  • Excellent research, numeracy, and analytical skills to convey complex issues effectively to diverse audiences

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Capacity to manage substantial workloads under tight deadlines while ensuring consistency and accuracy
  • Strong news literacy, critical thinking skills, and an acute sense of accuracy and truth

Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants who demonstrate the following will be favored:

  • Experience in transnational multilingual digital newsrooms
  • Understanding of fact-checking, disinformation, and digital tools for fact-checking
  • Familiarity with mining and handling large datasets
  • Strong decision-making and exceptional presentation skills

Role and Responsibilities:
The selected candidates will be integral members of PesaCheck’s transnational fact-checking team, working collaboratively with locally-based fact-checkers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Proactively monitoring various local and regional sources—ranging from mainstream media to social media and chat applications—to identify and combat misleading or malign content
  • Analyzing public statements and manuscripts for factual errors and logical inconsistencies, categorizing them as misinformation or other misleading content

  • Conducting thorough investigations and utilizing additional documents and sources to classify the content correctly
  • Producing comprehensive ‘explainer articles’ that clarify the classification of misinformation, grounded in substantive research and interviews, while making the findings accessible to the general public
