- To assist the IAEA’s programs through the contribution of skilled and knowledgeable interns specialized in various fields relevant to nuclear power technology.
Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Energy (NE) focuses on promoting the efficient and safe use of nuclear power in collaboration with Member States.
It seeks to improve nuclear power plant performance, enhance the nuclear fuel cycle, manage nuclear waste effectively, foster innovation in nuclear technologies, and support national energy planning and the deployment of new nuclear power facilities.
The Division of Nuclear Power is comprised of several sections, each dedicated to crucial aspects of nuclear energy:
- Nuclear Power Engineering Section (NPES)
- Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section (NIDS)
- International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO)
- Nuclear Power Technology Development Section (NPTDS)
The Nuclear Power Technology Development Section plays a pivotal role in helping Member States develop safe, sustainable, and economically viable civil reactor technologies, including small and medium-sized reactors (SMRs).
It encourages international collaboration through technical meetings, coordinated research projects, and training sessions.
Main Purpose of the Internship
Interns will focus on supporting the Nuclear Power Technology Development Section by:
- Identifying issues in the engineering design of auxiliary and support systems in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
- Conducting assessments of responses from Member States to the IAEA survey regarding design and system readiness evaluations of SMRs.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Interns will be responsible for:
- Collating design descriptions for auxiliary and support systems in SMRs, emphasizing integral PWR and HTGR technologies.
- Assessing Member States’ responses to the IAEA Survey on Approaches for Design and System Readiness Evaluations of SMRs.
- Updating or uploading new SMR design information in the IAEA Advanced Reactor Information System (ARIS) to ensure the database is current ahead of the 69th General Conference.
- Providing technical assistance for events, particularly the Technical Working Group meetings on SMRs and General Conference side events.
