CIHR Health System Impact Fellowship 2025

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is pleased to announce the launch of the Health System Impact Fellowship program, a unique opportunity for highly qualified doctoral trainees and post-doctoral researchers to gain embedded research experience within health system organizations.

Program Objectives

The Health System Impact Fellowship program aims to:

Support impact-oriented career paths and elevate the career readiness of doctoral trainees and post-doctoral researchers studying health services and policy research (HSPR) by providing embedded research opportunities within health system organizations.

Expand and enrich the traditional doctoral and post-doctoral training environment by engaging health system organizations in preparing a cadre of emerging leaders, inclusive of those from equity-denied communities and those who have historically faced systemic barriers in the research ecosystem.

Provide health system organizations with direct opportunities to realize and harness the benefits that research-trained individuals can bring to such organizations for rapid learning, improvement, and evidence-informed decision-making.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible to apply, candidates must:

    • Be a trainee who is enrolled full-time in a doctoral degree or has obtained their doctoral degree (PhD or DrPH) in a HSPR or related field.
    • Have not previously held a HSI doctoral or post-doctoral award.

    • Have a health system supervisor from the host health system organization who is a health system leader (an executive-level decision maker) within the organization.

    • Have an academic supervisor who has an academic appointment with a university-based graduate training program in Canada.
    • Meet the eligibility criteria for their chosen funding pool.

    Funding

    The program provides funding for two streams:

    Doctoral Trainees (Stream A): Up to $50,000 for one year, including a stipend of $45,000 and a professional development training and research allowance of $5,000.

    Post-Doctoral Researchers (Stream B): Up to $155,000 for two years, including a stipend of $70,000 per year and a professional development training and research allowance of $7,500 per year.

    The application deadline is July 3, 2025.
