The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) is excited to invite applications for the 2025/26 AREF Research Development Fellowship Programme.

This unique opportunity is designed to support emerging leaders in Africa who are dedicated to addressing significant challenges in human health.
Programme Overview:
Aim: To empower early career researchers in Africa to develop their skills and enhance their contributions to health-related research.
What We Offer:
- A 3 to 9-month placement at a leading research institution in the UK, Europe, or Africa.
- Additional support provided at the home institution before and after the placement.
- Up to £47,000 available to cover associated costs.
Eligibility Criteria:
- This fellowship is specifically for early career researchers, including post-doctoral scientists and clinicians with advanced qualifications.
- Applicants must be nationals of and employed in Africa.
Application Process:
- Interested candidates should carefully read the provided guidance documents before crafting their proposal and completing the application.
- Applications must be submitted via the portal at AREF Application Portal.
Important Dates:
- Deadline for submission: 13.00 hours GMT on 27 June 2025
- Applicants will be notified of the outcomes by December 2025.
- Successful fellowships can commence between June 2026 and no later than December 2026.

It is crucial for applicants to discuss their fellowship plans and career development with relevant leaders within their Employing Organisation and Host Organisation.
Please note that AREF does not reimburse salary fees to your Employing Organisation during your placement. However, we support reasonable accommodation, travel, subsistence, and training costs.
