
The 2025 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science South Africa National Young Talents Programme is now accepting applications!
This distinguished program is dedicated to recognizing and rewarding exceptionally talented young female scientists across various fields, specifically in Formal sciences, Life sciences, Environmental sciences, Physical sciences, Engineering, and Technological sciences.

- 10 March 2025: Call for Applications Opens

- 6 March 2025: Start of Call for Application/Nomination
- 20 May 2025: Application/Nomination Closes
- 18 July 2025: Final Selection of Candidates
In its seventh edition, the programme strives to foster and promote the engagement of young African women in the sciences.
It not only acknowledges the quality of research conducted by these remarkable women but also encourages them to pursue fulfilling careers in science throughout any province in South Africa.
Research Grants Available:
- Three grants of R80,000 each are available for PhD researchers currently enrolled at a South African institution, who are completing their doctorate in a research laboratory.
- Three grants of R160,000 each will be awarded to post-doctoral researchers working in a laboratory or research institute within one of the nine South African provinces.
This initiative exists within the broader framework of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science partnership, aiming to mitigate the gender gap in science by enhancing diversity and excellence through the provision of financial support and recognition.
It acknowledges the vital contributions women scientists make towards progressing scientific research and innovation.

Main Eligibility Criteria:
For Doctoral Candidates:
- Must have South African Nationality (non-South African applicants should refer to the FWIS Sub-Saharan Programme).
- Must be enrolled in a South African university and conducting their doctorate in a research laboratory located in one of the nine provinces (refer to Annexure 1 for a list of provinces).
- Applicants must be in the 2nd year of their thesis.
- Research must be conducted in one of the scientific fields specified in the rules document.
For Post-Doctoral Candidates:
- Must have South African Nationality (non-South African applicants should refer to the FWIS Sub-Saharan Programme).
- Must be enrolled in a post-doctorate position in a research laboratory or institution within one of the nine provinces.
- Must have obtained a doctorate in one of the scientific fields listed in the rules document.
- Should have started the post-doctorate position before the opening date of this call for applications.
- Candidates must have at least two years remaining in their respective programs at the time of application to fully utilize the grant in 2026.

- Quality of the application
- Ability to communicate and promote science
Since its initial launch in 2019, the programme has awarded a total of 39 endowments to date.
