Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Internship Programme 2025

1. Introduction

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is a Regional Economic Community (REC) that includes Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.

Established in 1996, IGAD evolved from the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD), founded in 1986 to combat the severe droughts causing famine, ecological degradation, and economic hardship in the region.

Driven by a vision of fostering a strong regional identity, IGAD aims to ensure peace and create a secure environment that alleviates poverty through sustainable development programs.

The IGAD Secretariat serves as the executive body responsible for building a resilient, peaceful, prosperous, and integrated region where citizens enjoy a high quality of life.

The core mission of IGAD is to promote regional cooperation and integration, enhancing Member States’ efforts in achieving peace, security, and prosperity.

IGAD is dedicated to promoting gender equality, non-discrimination, and equal opportunities across its initiatives.

2. Purpose of Internship

IGAD seeks to provide strategic internship placements for 14 young professionals (2 per country) interested in advancing gender equality in various fields.

This Internship Programme is designed to attract talented young women and men motivated to contribute innovative ideas and perspectives within IGAD.

Interns will be assigned to different IGAD Divisions based on their educational qualifications and will work at IGAD offices located in their respective home countries.

They will gain on-the-job training and practical work experience while supporting initiatives that advance gender equality.

3. Qualifications, Key Duties, and Specific Responsibilities

3.1. Qualifications

  • minimum of a bachelor’s degree or enrollment in a university graduate study (master’s) program with plans to return to school after the internship.
  • Less than two years of professional work experience after completing their second degree (master’s).

3.2. Other Requirements

  • Nationality: Must be a national of IGAD Member States.
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is an added advantage.

  • Age: Candidates should be aged between 21 and 27 at the start of the internship.
  • Skills: Adaptability to an international multicultural environment, good communication skills, and proficiency in basic computer programs.

3.3. Skills

Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm, self-direction, excellent time management, and the ability to manage assigned tasks independently.

3.4. Key Duties

Interns are expected to provide hands-on support in programme/project implementation and gender mainstreaming in their assigned areas.

4. Reporting

Interns will report to a Project Manager allocated for their supervision, who will evaluate their day-to-day assignments in collaboration with the IGAD Gender Office.

At the conclusion of the internship, interns must submit a report detailing their experiences and contributions.

5. Remuneration

Please note that no salary will be paid to the interns.

6. Timeframe and Duty Station

The internship placement will span three (3) months, with duty stations in the candidate’s country of application and possible travel within the IGAD region.
