UNESCO-Al Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists in STEM

The UNESCO-Al Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is excited to announce that it is now accepting applications and nominations for its second edition.
About the Prize
The UNESCO-Al Fozan International Prize seeks to enhance research, education, and international collaboration in STEM fields.
It aims to address global challenges that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This esteemed Prize recognizes the significant contributions of young scientists whose work fosters global socio-economic progress.
Particularly, it encourages greater participation in science among women and girls to promote gender equality and inspire scientific careers.
Awarded biennially, the Prize celebrates five laureates from UNESCO’s five geographic regions—Africa, Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and North America, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Each laureate will receive:
- A monetary award of $50,000
- A medal
- A diploma
Additionally, the Prize aligns with UNESCO’s commitment to gender equality, striving to inspire more women to pursue careers in STEM.
Eligibility Criteria
Achievements: Candidates must have gained recognition for noteworthy achievements or contributions in one or more of the following areas:
- Research in STEM, including emerging technologies
- STEM education, dissemination of research findings, and innovation
- International or regional cooperation in STEM
Age: Candidates must be under 40 years old at the time of the application deadline.
Gender Equality: Nominations of young women scientists are strongly encouraged to promote gender balance in STEM fields.

How to Apply:

- Complete the Application Form: Provide detailed information about your achievements and contributions that align with the submission criteria.
- Prepare Supporting Documents: Upload all necessary documents, including:
- A description of your background and achievements
- A summary of your work, publications, and significant contributions
- A statement detailing your contribution to the objectives of the Prize
Language Requirement: All applications must be completed in full in English or French.
Submit Before Deadline: Ensure that your application is submitted online before 15 April 2025.
For Nominators
Who Can Nominate:
Nominations can be submitted by:
- Governments of UNESCO Member States
- Non-governmental organizations maintaining official partnerships with UNESCO
- UNESCO Chairs
- Category 2 Centres under the auspices of UNESCO
- International scientific unions
- Universities (e.g., Head of a Department, Dean, or management professional)
Please Note: Self-nominations are not accepted.
Two Methods for Submitting a Nomination:
- The nominating entity can register online as a nominator and submit the nomination directly.
- The nominating entity can provide the candidate with a nomination letter to upload directly with their application.
Nomination Letter Requirements:
- Must be on the official letterhead of the nominating entity
- Include the name, email address, and telephone number of the nominator
- Be signed by an authorized representative
- Include official stamps or seals, if available
How to Nominate a Candidate:
- Register Online: Authorized representatives from eligible nominating entities should visit https://apply.unescoalfozanprize.org/ to create a nominator account.
- Account Verification: Your account will be verified. Once approved, it will be activated for submitting nominations.
- Nominate a Candidate:
- Enter candidate details and your recommendation information.
- Submit the nomination.
Language Requirement: All nominations must be submitted in full in English or French.
Submit Before Deadline: Ensure that your nomination is submitted before 15 April 2025.
Important Notes
- Account Activation: Only verified nominators can submit nominations. Plan for account verification when submitting.
- Incomplete or Late Submissions: Late or incomplete applications and nominations will not be considered.
- Collaboration: Nominators are encouraged to inform candidates of their nominations to ensure timely completion of applications.
- Multiple Nominations: Entities may submit multiple nominations but must do so separately.
- Self-Nomination: Candidates should apply directly, as self-nominations without endorsement will not be considered.
