TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme 2025 for sub-Saharan Africa (Fully-funded to Germany)

The TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme invites postdoctoral researchers from sub-Saharan Africa to embark on a transformative ‘Cooperation Visit’ lasting three months to a research institute in Germany.
These visits are designed to foster research collaborations between African and German scientists, ultimately aiming for the establishment of longer-term partnerships through various Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) programmes.

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must hold a PhD obtained not earlier than 2020. For female applicants, the year limit may be extended by two years per child, allowing flexibility for those with young families.
This exception applies to a maximum of three children, allowing for a potential extension of six years. Therefore, a female applicant with three or more children should not have obtained her PhD before 2014.
Potential applicants should have experience in a science system (including graduate and postgraduate training, research, teaching) in a sub-Saharan African country for at least five years prior to this call.
Those currently in Germany or with an established collaboration with the intended host are not eligible. Examples of established collaboration include having a common publication or prior supervision for MSc or PhD by the host Professor.
Previous recipients of a TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visit are not eligible to apply for a second visit without specific conditions.

Application Submission Requirements:
Applicants are required to complete the online application form and upload the following documents:
- Scanned copy of passport (even if expired, showing name and surname).
- A recent invitation letter from a German host that:
- Is a maximum of two pages on official letterhead.
- Specifies the proposed duration of up to three months and references the cooperation proposal.
- Confirms mutual agreement on the research proposal.
- Assures availability of necessary research facilities.
- Two reference letters from senior scientists familiar with the applicant’s work, on headed paper and signed.
- Copy of PhD certificate.
- Evidence of proficiency in English or German.
- A supporting statement from the Head/Director of the applicant’s home institute, indicating approval for the visit and confirming leave for the applicant if awarded.
Additional Information:
Please note that TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits do not cover expenses for accompanying family members, and applications for part-time visits will be considered ineligible.
Successful applicants must not undertake any other assignments during their visit, and DFG reserves the right to seek repayment if conditions are violated.
