2025 Africa Writeshop in Critical Agrarian Studies and Scholar-Activism

The Journal of Peasant Studies (JPS), together with its esteemed partners, is excited to announce the Africa Writeshop in Critical Agrarian Studies and Scholar-Activism taking place from 29 September to 6 October 2025 at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa.

This initiative is a collaboration among the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), Collective of Agrarian Scholar-Activists from the South (CASAS), Initiatives in Critical Agrarian Studies (ICAS), and the International Institute for Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

The Writeshop aims to empower PhD students and early career researchers who are based in or originally from Africa by enhancing their understanding of international journal publications in the field of Critical Agrarian Studies.

Position Overview
The Africa Writeshop seeks a maximum of 25 participants consisting of PhD researchers in their post-fieldwork phase and early career researchers (up to eight years from PhD completion).

Participants will engage in strategic discussions and practical workshops focusing on critical aspects of scholar-activism specific to agrarian and food systems, particularly under the pressures of climate change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend eight days of intensive workshops that will cover topics including journal selection, manuscript preparation, navigating peer reviews, and improving publication strategies.
  • Participate in field visits and peer review sessions throughout the Writeshop.
  • Circulate a draft manuscript (based on an accepted abstract) of 8,000-10,000 words prior to the Writeshop.

Application Criteria
Interested candidates must submit the following:

  • An abstract of 500 words related to critical agrarian studies as per the JPS aims and scope.
  • A short bio of 250 words.
  • Names and contact information of two academic references.

Successful applicants will be required to confirm their acceptance and submit their draft manuscript before the Writeshop.

Logistics
Selected participants will receive comprehensive logistical details ahead of the Writeshop, including information regarding accommodation and visa requirements.

Participants will arrive on 28 September 2025 and depart on 6 October 2025.

Opportunity for Continued Engagement
Workshop participants are also invited to stay for a second week to attend the Land, Life and Society Conference organized by PLAAS, happening from 7-9 October 2025.
