The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is pleased to announce an open Call for Applications for its esteemed Visiting Fellowship Programme 2025.
The deadline is 7 May, 2025.
This programme offers an enriching opportunity for scholars to further their academic pursuits in a world-class research environment.
Selected fellows will have exclusive access to the ASCL’s excellent library facilities, the chance to collaborate and network with fellow researchers, and the opportunity to participate in our regular seminars.
About the Organisation:
The African Studies Centre Leiden is a premier research institute dedicated to the study and dissemination of knowledge about Africa.
With a rich history of academic excellence, the ASCL supports scholars who seek to generate and share insightful research.
Our fellowship programme is designed to inspire innovative scholarship and foster international collaboration.

To be considered for a Visiting Research Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must hold a PhD degree by the time of application.
- Must have conducted research focused on Africa, as part of their PhD and/or in subsequent projects.
- Must be actively pursuing an academic or research career.
- Must have published books, book chapters, and/or journal articles in recent years that adhere to international standards.
- Must, in accordance with visa regulations, be prepared to return to their country of citizenship or current residence upon completion of the fellowship.
Preference will be given to applicants based in Africa, defined as the member states of the African Union. “Based in” refers to having lived in Africa during at least two of the last four years.
Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on the quality and feasibility of the intended work and outputs from the fellowship, referred to as the research proposal in the application form.
Review Procedure:
Each applicant is required to indicate the Centre for Research Group (CRG) they wish to be affiliated with, ensuring their research topic aligns with the CRG’s focus.
Each CRG will nominate their preferred candidate, and the Visiting Fellowship Committee will conduct a final review to ensure programme objectives, including gender and geographic balance, are maintained.
Fellowship Details:
The research fellowship package includes:
- A return ticket (economy class).
- Coverage of living costs (fixed amount).
- Accommodation in Leiden: fellows will have access to their own single bed/sitting room, with kitchens and bathrooms shared with a maximum of two other fellows. Self-financed visitors interested in spending time at ASCL for research are also welcome. They may request access to a shared desk, contingent on availability, and utilize ASCL’s library resources.
