Role Description
The Policy Intern is a highly motivated early-career expert who aligns closely with BASIC’s mission and harbors long-term career aspirations in disarmament, arms control, and non-proliferation.
Essential skills include drafting, research, communication, and event organization.
The intern will thrive in a close-knit, friendly team environment and will exhibit a proactive attitude with the capacity to complete tasks independently after training.
The intern will support BASIC’s Nuclear Responsibilities Programme through daily activities and projects, collaborating with a team of experts.
Responsibilities will encompass assisting with research, facilitating Track 2 nuclear risk reduction dialogues, and contributing to key Program initiatives.
This role also presents opportunities for publication with BASIC and valuable career development in relevant fields.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Project Work
- Support event organization, including drafting and sending invitations and tracking RSVPs
- Organize and coordinate venues, travel, accommodation, and catering
- Conduct background research on various issue areas
- Coordinate research interviews and manage related logistics
- Proofread and reference research materials
- Execute similar tasks as necessary to support project operations
Organizational Support
- Provide administrative support, liaising with the finance team for invoice processing
- Note-taking during meetings and preparing briefing papers
- Manage BASIC’s social media presence and website content
- Execute similar tasks as required to support organizational operations
Skills and Experience
- Educated to Master’s level in Social Sciences (International Relations, International Security, or History) with an emphasis on nuclear weapons issues.
- At least 1 year of work experience with a think tank, research institute, NGO, foundation, or government focusing on international security issues or related office experience.
- Demonstrated passion for and commitment to BASIC’s mission of advancing global security dialogue.
- Effective communication skills with diverse stakeholders across various professional and cultural backgrounds.
- Strong analytical and methodological abilities, organized research approach.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, evidenced through successful team collaboration.
- Event organization experience, particularly with roundtables, panels, or international travel.
- Strong organizational skills paired with a keen eye for detail.
- Availability for international travel.
- Proven research and writing capabilities, including peer-reviewed articles or opinion editorials on relevant topics.
