African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) Internship Programme (A Monthly Tax-free Stipend of $1,500)

The Afreximbank Group constitutes a diverse array of organizations focusing on the enhancement and promotion of trade across Africa.

Afreximbank was established through joint agreements among member states and organizations, granting it the status of an international institution.

With its headquarters nestled in Cairo, Egypt, the Bank operates branches in Harare, Zimbabwe, Abuja, Nigeria, Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Kampala, Uganda, Yaoundé Cameroon, and Bridgetown, Barbados.

Interns will contribute innovative ideas to the Afreximbank Group while gaining pivotal knowledge relevant to their future careers.

Background to Internship Placement

This internship program welcomes candidates who are:

  • Nationals of the Bank’s member countries,
  • Students of African descent in the diaspora,
  • Non-African students whose vision aligns with the mission of Afreximbank.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrollment in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programs in fields such as economics, business administration, finance, accounting, and engineering.
  • Proof of nationality or descent as mentioned above.

  • Proficiency in English or French, and a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese is advantageous.
  • Age between 20 and 32 years during the year of application.
  • Candidates must not be children of Afreximbank staff.

Working Time

The internships are offered for a maximum of six months, split into two cycles each year (January and June). Applications are accepted on an open-ended basis throughout the year.

Job Location

The primary location for the internships will be Cairo, Egypt, where the headquarters of the Afreximbank Group is situated. Interns may be required to relocate for the duration of their placement.

Application Procedure

To apply for an internship position, candidates must submit:

  • A completed online internship application form.
  • letter of application.
  • current CV.
  • valid passport copy.
  • Certified copies of academic certificates.
  • recommendation from their educational institution including the proposed internship duration.
  • Short Statement of Intent (maximum of 1 A4 page).

Internship Commencement

Successful candidates will have two weeks to accept their conditional offer. They must provide proof of medical insurance valid during the internship in Egypt.

The internship is not virtual; interns will be expected to physically relocate to Cairo.

Terms and Conditions of the Internship

Interns must manage their living expenses, including accommodation and meals. However, the Afreximbank Group will provide:

  • Coverage for reasonable return fare transport to the internship location.
  • monthly stipend of USD 1,000 and an accommodation allowance of USD 500.
  • Hotel accommodation for the induction week.
  • Necessary residence visa for the internship duration.

Other Conditions

  • Hotel accommodation cannot be exchanged for cash.
  • Interns will not earn any of the employment benefits provided to Bank staff.
  • Interns may participate only once with a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months.
  • This internship program does not guarantee employment.
  • Compliance with Group regulations is essential, and violations may lead to immediate termination of the internship.
