The Nuclear Proliferation International History Project (NPIHP), in partnership with the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe), is delighted to announce a call for applications for the Nuclear History Summer Camp 2025: Hiroshima Special Edition.

This unique program will be hosted in Hiroshima, Japan, from September 6 to September 16, 2025, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
About NPIHP and HOPe
The Nuclear Proliferation International History Project is dedicated to enhancing public and scholarly understanding of international nuclear history.
Through extensive research, it has played a pivotal role in documenting and analyzing the intricacies of the nuclear age.
Joining forces with the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace, an institution fervently committed to promoting peace and advocating for nuclear disarmament, this camp represents a fusion of historical insight and peacebuilding.
Workshop Overview
This nine-day intensive camp aims to cultivate a new generation of experts in the international history of the nuclear age.
Participants will:
Enhance their research skills by engaging with primary sources, expert lectures, and interactive workshops.
Dive deep into the history of nuclear issues, exploring topics from the evolution of nuclear technology to the origins of deterrence theory and the current global nuclear landscape.
Focus on pressing themes, including but not limited to, nuclear disarmament, the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapon usage, and security without nuclear deterrence.
Participation Details
- Location: Hiroshima, Japan
- Dates: September 6th (arrival) – September 16th (departure)
- Tuition and Accommodations: Participants will receive full tuition coverage, along with round-trip airfare to Hiroshima, as well as accommodations and meals throughout the duration of the camp.
Eligibility Criteria
The 2025 Nuclear History Summer Camp is open to:
Ph.D. Students: Those currently enrolled in or accepted into a Ph.D. program in international history, international relations, political science, or related fields.
M.A. Graduates: Individuals who have completed their M.A. degree and are considering a Ph.D. in the aforementioned fields, particularly those focusing on topics related to nuclear issues.
Post-doctoral Candidates: Applications are welcome from those who defended their dissertation no more than three years prior.

Interested applicants must submit the following materials:
- A brief resume or CV (maximum 2 pages).
- A letter of recommendation from a professor, supervisor, or senior professional colleague who is familiar with the applicant’s work (Only one letter required).
- A brief abstract (maximum 200 words) of current academic research.
- A statement of purpose (limited to 400 words) outlining how participation in the Nuclear History Boot Camp will help meet personal, professional, or academic goals.
