About the WTO Internship Programme
The World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat offers a limited internship program for postgraduate university students who wish to gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of the multilateral trading system.
This programme is open to post-graduate students from all WTO member states and those engaged in accession negotiations.
Position Overview
The WTO Secretariat is seeking an intern for the Fisheries Subsidies Unit (Fish Team) within the Rules Division.
The successful candidate will work for six months and will be supervised by the Head of the Fish Team or another designated staff member.
Key Responsibilities
As an intern in the Fisheries Subsidies Unit, you will:
- Conduct research and draft briefing notes on fisheries subsidies, including global, regional, and national fisheries legal frameworks, policies, and practices.
- Contribute to the preparatory work for the future Committee on Fisheries Subsidies, including creating databases, collecting data, and researching best practices.
- Follow and report on fisheries subsidies-related meetings and discussions.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
- Basic knowledge of fisheries-related legal frameworks, including the law of the sea, fisheries management, or fisheries subsidies.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple workstreams under pressure with strict deadlines.
- A strong desire to learn and collaborate effectively within a team.
Education:
- Current students or recent graduates of postgraduate programs (Master’s/PhD) in a relevant field.
Languages:
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English.
- Working knowledge of French or Spanish is an asset but not mandatory.
Eligibility Criteria
- Interns must be nationals of WTO member states and observer governments.
- Applicants must have completed at least one year of their postgraduate studies in a relevant discipline (economics, law, political science, international relations).
- Minimum age of 21 years and maximum age of 30 years.
Contractual Terms and Conditions
- A daily allowance of CHF 60 will be provided (including weekends and official holidays). No additional remuneration will be paid.
- Internships last for a minimum of three months to a maximum of six months, with no extensions.
- Interns are responsible for their own travel and insurance for the duration of the internship.
