
The John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2026 intake.
Applications close on the 30 April 2025.
This competitive, merit-based program is designed specifically for scientists and economists from ACIAR partner countries who are currently engaged or have recently participated in ACIAR research projects.
The Fellowship offers the opportunity to pursue formal postgraduate qualifications—either a Masters by Research or a PhD—at an esteemed Australian tertiary institution.
The primary objective of the JAF is to enhance scientific research capability and institutional collaborations in ACIAR partner countries, thereby facilitating high-quality and impactful research outcomes.
About the John Allwright Fellowship:
As the largest investment in the ACIAR Capacity Development Program, the JAF provides scholarships that include:
- Full tuition fees
- Return air travel (economy class)
- Establishment allowance
- Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE)
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
- Additional academic support and pastoral care
With 39 JAFs already enrolled across 15 universities in Australia, this Fellowship is a vital resource aimed at empowering researchers to advance their skills in the face of global challenges, particularly climate change.
Focus on Climate Change:
Recognizing the urgent need for research in sustainable agricultural practices, the 2026 intake will allocate specific places for projects that address climate change, climate adaptation, or resilience building.
Applicants are encouraged to integrate climate considerations into their research proposals, addressing the pressing realities faced by the agriculture and food systems in the Indo-Pacific region.
Eligibility Criteria:
To apply for the JAF, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a citizen of a partner country and currently involved in an ACIAR research project.
- Secure endorsement from your employer and ACIAR Project Leaders.
- Hold qualifications equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline.
- Have recently completed an English language proficiency test and be prepared to provide results upon application.
- Ensure your research proposal addresses gender equity, climate change, and development priorities relevant to your country.
Supporting Documents:
To complete your application, please upload the following mandatory documents:
- Proof of citizenship (Birth certificate)
- An identity document (passport must have an expiry date more than 6 months from the application date)
- Certified copies of degree certificates
- Certified copies of academic transcripts
- Research proposal (consider how the proposed research will address gender equity and social inclusion, climate change, as well as the project contribution to the development priority of your country).
- Employer endorsement letter (Template available)
- Australian Project Leader referee report (Template available)
- Collaborating Country Project Leader referee report (Template available)
- Primary Supervisor endorsement letter (This can be a formal letter or copy of email correspondence)
Additional supporting documents are recommended to strengthen your application.

Application Process:
Applications for the 2026 intake round open on the 1 February 2025 and close on the 30 April 2025 via the Online Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS).
You must register an account in OASIS as this will enable you to logon, create and complete an application form. When starting an application you will need to select the ACIAR John Allwright Fellowships award program.
