The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) has announced an exciting opportunity for media organizations to apply for its 2025 biodiversity media grants.
Applications close 30 March 2025.
Aimed at enhancing media reporting on biodiversity issues, these grants come at a critical time when experts emphasize the urgent need for action to protect biodiversity and combat the climate crisis.
Overview
At recent global summits, including COP16 in Cali, Colombia, and COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the interconnectedness of biodiversity loss and climate change has become glaringly apparent.
Despite this recognition, climate change stories often dominate funding and media attention, relegating important conservation and biodiversity narratives to the background.
This disparity jeopardizes efforts to meet key biodiversity targets, such as the 30×30 goal outlined in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Biodiversity underpins our survival, providing essential resources and enhancing the planet’s resilience to disasters.
To bridge this information gap, EJN’s Biodiversity Media Initiative will award 3-4 media grants aimed at elevating the quality and quantity of biodiversity stories while empowering journalists to better cover these critical issues and their links to climate and health.
Eligibility
To be eligible for these grants, applicants must be from media organizations, civil society groups, journalist networks, or academic institutions based in low- or middle-income countries.
Projects focusing on biodiversity-rich areas or regions experiencing significant biodiversity loss are especially welcome.
While NGOs or environmental groups can submit applications, EJN prefers proposals directly linked to professional journalists or journalism schools.
Key eligibility notes include:
- Applications must be submitted in English.
- NGOs engaged in advocacy or political campaigning will not be considered.
- Past EJN grantees can apply, provided they did not receive funding in 2024.
Project Themes and Objectives
Funded projects should aim to enhance public understanding of biodiversity threats while highlighting potential conservation solutions. While projects may solely focus on content creation, preference will be given to those also centered on capacity-building for journalists.
Projects may include:
- In-depth investigative reporting
- Collaborative initiatives spanning multiple regions
- Training and workshops for journalists
- Innovative mapping or fact-checking tools
EJN is particularly interested in proposals addressing:
- Effective conservation strategies beyond traditional protected areas.
- Nature-based solutions that interlink with climate, health, and food security.
- The complexities of digital access to genetic resources.
- The unintended consequences of certain conservation measures.
Grant Amount and Logistics
EJN anticipates awarding grants ranging from €10,000 to €12,000. While smaller budgets may be more competitive, larger requests will be considered for innovative projects requiring significant resources.
Selected applicants will be notified by April 2025, with work commencing in May 2025 and concluding within 12 months.
Applicants must submit a detailed budget outlining all expected expenses and justifying their requests. The total budget must allow for equipment purchases to not exceed 10% of the overall budget, and staff costs should not surpass 50% of the total without justification. Co-financing is permitted but not required.
Judging Criteria
A panel of Internews staff and environmental reporting experts will evaluate applications based on overall proposal quality, relevance, potential impact, innovation, cost-effectiveness, applicant capacity, and long-term sustainability.
How to Apply
To apply, interested organizations must visit the EJN application portal, where they can create an account or log in to submit their materials.
The application will require a detailed budget, and all supporting documents must be prepared in advance.
For questions or technical difficulties, applicants are encouraged to reach out to EJN at info.ejn@internews.org.
Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered, so it’s crucial to apply promptly.
